Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
