Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
